Tutoring Service Overview

iGen Education provides engaging and effective 1:1 tutoring and small group instruction for students in grades K-12. My pedagogy and teaching methods are rooted in research based constructivist theory.

Passive transmission of knowledge and direct instruction are no longer effective for learning in a fast paced and technology driven environment. iGen Education provides tailored, active instruction and teaches  methodologies and schema to develop indepdendent problem solving skills. I work with each student to assess their needs, develop an action plan and provide a toolkit of skills for success in the classroom and beyond.

Please submit an inqury form if you are interested in the various K-12 service offerings.

What is the educational value of a professional tutor?

A trained educator who works in a 1:1 environment with your student is able to provide the exact amount of scaffolding to support your child towards mastery of new concepts. The illustration below shows how an educator will progress a student through the Zone of Proximal Development towards previously inconceivable tasks.

iGen Education utilizes 21st century methodologies to develop independent learners. Example of methodologies include: inquiry based learning; personalized direct instruction; differentiated instruction based on learner strengths and areas of improvement; integrated instruction using g-suite and learning management systems.

Sequencing of curriculum aligns content with requisite skills

Curriculum development from large textbook corporations and education companies are designed to meet state standards and prepare ALL learners in the same sequence and methods. Teachers are left to differentiate and design instruction to meet the needs of each individual student.

I firmly believe in the ability of all students and focus my differentiation on James Bruner’s theory of spiral curriculum. Bruner famously wrote, “We begin with the hypothesis that any subject can be taught in some intellectually honest form to any child at any stage of development (1960).”

The value of active learning and constructivist teaching

“Active learning methods ask students to fully participate in their learning by thinking, discussing, investigating, and creating. In active learning classrooms, students may be asked to practice skills, solve problems, struggle with complex questions, propose solutions, and explain ideas in their own words through writing and discussion. Research indicates that active learning methods are especially effective for student learning, when compared to classes that primarily consist of lecturing.” – Cornell Center for Teaching for Innovation

Individualized Learning with a Focus on Digital Skills and Independence

iGen Education is dedicated to providing solutions for your child that help prepare them for today and the future. Students are encouraged to build independence that allows them to excel with various educational platforms and tools. ISTE states that, “Today’s students must be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape. The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process.”
